Abbey roads

in #travel9 years ago (edited)

The abbey of Grimbergen is one of the oldest inhabited Norbertine abbeys in Belgium, build in the 1120's.
The abbey nowadays is probably more famous for it's beer, Grimbergen ale, but the grounds around the abbey are a nice place to take a strawl.
Basicly cultivated farmlands with orchards, meadows and watermills used to be owned by the abbey, now public area's.

The Liermolen, mill, was sold to the abbey in 1341 by the Lords of Lire and is one of the 4 watermills standing near the Maalbeek stream.

Another watermill is the 16th century Tommenmolen, sold to the abbey in 1573.

Grimbergen itself is an old medieval tribal area from the Berthouts at their request the abbey was constructed, they fought for centuries with the earls of Leuven until they got defeated. Just north of Brussels it's a good place to take a load of and take some walks.

Thank you for posting @nin0000. Lovely photographs of a lovely place.

Appreciate you bringing the abbey to Steemit.

I confess: i read "Grimbergen" and thought of beer directly :) Nice photos!

Didn't have any beer to take pictures from unfortunately, thanks Herverisson.
