Hi everyone! I would like to share some pictures of my recent trip to the beautiful city of Brussels in Belgium. This city visit was part of my first ever Europe trip, and the whole journey was simply AMAZING! I definitely learned and enjoyed a lot along the way. Hopefully after reading this you are also inspired to go out and make a trip to this beautiful and inspiring city. Let's get started!

Atomium
Let's kick off with one of the most iconic symbols of Belgium, the world-famous 'Atomium'. The Atomium was the main pavilion and icon of the World Fair of Brussels (1958), commonly called Expo 58. The structure consists of nine 18 m (60 ft) diameter stainless steel spheres that are connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. It symbolizes the democratic will to maintain peace among all the nations, faith in progress, both technical and scientific and, finally, an optimistic vision of the future of a modern, new, super-technological world for a better life for human beings.

Brusselse Waffle
A trip to Brussels is not complete without trying the delicious local delicacy: 'Brusselse Waffle'. There are many varieties of the waffle, but you can easily recognize a true "Brusselse" waffle by its rectangular shape and deep, square pockets. Main ingredients include: flour, sugar, baking powder, egg, milk and butter. Most waffles are topped with whipped cream, strawberries or sugar. However, you can go more crazy if you want. Look at how far this shop went with decorating their waffles:

Manneken Pis ("The Peeing Boy")
Another iconic cultural symbol of Belgium is "Manneken Pis" or "The Peeing Boy". Manneken Pis was at first a fountain that played an essential role in the city's water supply since the 15th century. Towards the end of the 17th century, the iconic symbol became more and more important in the city life. It was also a survivor of the bombardment of Brussels in 1695. During big events, the little boy is dressed with special outfits that suit the occassion. I was told that in the 18th century, Manneken Pis was dressed at least 4 times a year. Currently, the statue is scheduled to be dressed up at least 23 times per year. Throughout the years, the little boy statue became an image and symbol of the Brussels folklore, the joy of the inhabitants and their capacity of self-mockery.
