The Republic of Kugelmugel
When a visitor of Vienna goes to the park of Prater, finds a strange spheric building. Which has a very interesting story, related of the Republic of Kugelmugel (Republik Kugelmugel in German). I have to admit that I did not know anything about it until I saw this building. In this post I will show some of the photos that I took of this unusual place and describe briefly its history.
In this photo you can see the spheric building and the famous ferris wheel of Prater.
The Republic of Kugelmugel is a micronation located at the heart of the city of Vienna. Its origin is related with the Austrian artist Edwin Lipburger (1928-2015). He planned to build a spheric house in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), since he considered that the spheric shape had the best integration and compatibility with nature. Lipburger had problems with the local authorities to get the approval of the construction permits. For that reason he declared the Republic of Kugelmugel in the year 1976.
Lipburger was sentenced in 1979 to ten weeks in prison, after a legal process in relation to the construction of the building and taxes. However the President of Austria pardoned him.
In 1982, the spheric house was moved to the actual site at Prater (Vienna). Certainly, we can say that it is a very unusual touristic attraction of the city.
The Republic of Kugelmugel has only one address: Antifaschismusplatz 2 ( “Anti-Fascism Square 2”) and it consists of only one building: the spherical house that was mentioned before. It has a 7.68 meters of diameters. As it can be seen in the photos the limits of this “nation” is surrounded with fences and barbed wire.
In the year 1980, this “nation” issued postage stamps and struck coins.
According to Wikipedia this “Republic” has 650 non-resident “citizens” registered.
I could not visit the interior of the house.

From outside it looks like a space ship hahah, do you know what it have inside? or how it looks like from inside?
