Travel to Kruger National Park - South Africa

Kruger National Park 

             The Kruger Park is the best and the most famous park among more than 400 parks and nature reserves that South Africa has. A visit to the Kruger is a must in every trip to South Africa.

But the park is very large and has very diverse areas; it is convenient to plan an adventure beforehand. Here are some tips that will be very useful when you plan your safari in Kruger Park:  

How to get there; 

In the vicinity of the park, there are three airports which are landing points of the two airline companies, South Africa Express (from Johannesburg) and South Africa Airways (from Cape Town). Prices may vary according to season between 180 and 500 euros.

If going by car, there is a six-hour-drive on good road from Johannesburg, the route is also very scenic and passes through places as beautiful as the Blyde River Canyon.

What does the entrance cost?  

The park has different entrance fees. In all of them, they charge a rate of 264 and (19 euros) per day for adults and 9.5 euros for children.  

Public or private  

The first thing to know about the Kruger is that most of its surface is public property, but there are also areas that function as private reserves. There are no fences between them so the animals can move freely throughout the territory, which is not the case for visitors.

The advantage of the public part is that you can enter by driving your own car, but it is absolutely forbidden to get out of the way and there are far fewer animals. In addition, there is usually saturation of vehicles in case of finding lions or elephants on the side of the road.

There are camps where you can set up your tent and very simple lodges, where you only get a bed, without meals. It is the cheapest option.  

             The private areas, former hunting estates, have numerous lodges and hotels of higher quality and better services (also, more expensive, although there are very varied prices). The great advantage of private reservations is that in addition to the price of the hotel that includes the entrance to park, meals and two game drives (safaris) with SUV and guides of the lodge.

They are authorized to go off the road to look for animals so the possibility of seeing bugs is much greater than in the public part.  

What are the best private reserves? 

There are seven private reserves; in theory, animals move freely by all, but the most famous and known for its density of animals is Sabi Sands. Mala follows in interest.

When is it open? 

            The Kruger can be visited all year round. In summer (from June to the end of August) the vegetation is dry and the landscape is harder, but the chances of seeing animals increase because they have to concentrate around water. 

During the rest of the year(from September to April) the landscape is greener and the animals can camouflage themselves better; in return, the large herds of mammals walk with their newly born calves, which is an added incentive.
