The National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka, which are also commonly referred to as Colombo Zoo or the Dehiwala Zoo, is a sprawling zoological park that dates back to the year 1936. It remains today an esteemed member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums

As of 2005, the zoological park was home to over 3,000 different animals and as of 2013 approximately 310 different species of animals. The park has been said to attract in the neighborhood of 1.5 million visitors annually, making it by and large one of the most prominent attractions in the area.

While the zoo is home to a number of exotic and domestic animals, some of the more prominent inhabitants include Asian elephants, big cats such as lions, jaguars, and tigers, zebras, an array of different primates, and 34 different species of reptiles.

The zoo also prides itself on the exchange of animals it houses with a number of other zoological parks worldwide for the purpose of healthy and safe breeding practices.

While there isn’t much on the surface that differentiates the park from other traditional zoos across the globe, Sri Lanka’s offering is famous for its dazzling elephant shows and performances as well as its large number of interactive exhibits and displays for visitors of all ages. It remains a top tourist attraction in the city of Colombo.
