           Museums are great chroniclers of our past. Visiting them is a wonderful way to know the history of a place. Tianjin Natural history museums are unique because they give us a glimpse of how our natural environments have evolved into what they are now. In China, the Tianjin N. H. Museum exists to help us understand these natural changes.

        To visit the museum, you must get to the city of Tianjin. From Beijing, this is a 30 to 40-minute ride by high-speed railway for 54.5 Chinese Yuan or at least 8 USD. The VIP seats are at CNY 174-184 or at least $28. By air, you can reach the city through the Tianjin Binhai International Airport. The airport also services, domestic flights from Beijing. When in Tianjin, you can take any of these buses: 9, 12, 14, or 902. There are also plenty of taxi cabs that can take you there.  

          The museum is open from 9AM to 5PM. The entrance fee is only at CNY 25 or $4. There are times when entry is free so if you are a foreigner, make sure to bring your passport with you. It is designed like a half-dome with panels made entirely of glass making it look very contemporary. Because of its architecture, the ventilation inside the building is breezy and comfortable.

           The exhibition halls are in the four floors of the building. Because of the circular construction of the halls, the flow of your visit will also follow a circular path. Facilities include elevators, escalators, and restrooms for your convenience.

      It is recommended that you spend at least half a day touring the museum. There are eight halls that you can visit, namely

II.    The Cambrian Explosion

III.   Competition for the Ocean

IV.   The Transition onto Land

V.     Diversity of Evolution

VI.    The Flight of Birds

VII.   Mammalian Radiation

VIII. Human Origins and Biological Intelligence

             Each exhibition hall has a theme. For example, the Birth of Life showcases prehistoric fossils during the early stages of evolution. The major exhibitions are of animals and plants.

          In the ground floor is a butterfly garden that you can explore first before seeing the other exhibition halls. It is estimated that the museum houses approximately 380,000 specimens. There are also 1,000 pieces of fossils preserved in the museum, as well as fossil replica. The replicas are so lifelike that it is difficult to tell them apart from the real ones. 

Those who love paleontology will be glad to know that paleontology specimens dating back to the Chinese Cenozoic Era are shown in the exhibit halls. Ancient mammal fossils from regions in China are also kept in the museum. The Sea World Pavilion is where the aquatic exhibits of the museum are displayed. Kids will surely love the place. The museum also caters to foreign visitors as English audio tours and guides are also available.   

Tianjin Natural History Museum should be in your To-Do list when visiting Tianjin. It is a great trip where you can take your family to enjoy and learn at the same time.
