Tis the season of growth

My friend who wanted to become a film director once told me, "all movies engage in growth".
The protagonist appearing in the start of the movie(A) is not the same person as s/he in the ending(B). During the running time, we experience the flow of events along with the protagonist. A well-made movie would convincingly illustrate the process of how character A develops and matures into character B, the storytelling of how he became who he is.

It has been my long desire to backpack Europe. When I knew it was bound to happen (aka when I purchased the round fair), I was more than excited and wanted the trip to be the turning point of my life. From the planning stage of the trip, I wanted to metaphorically treat it as a movie, hoping to take a full cycle of Hero's Journey (Joseph Cambell's).
After all, I am the protagonist of my life.

Spring of 2017, I hopped from country to country in Europe.
Marking a start from London, my journey ended its note in Venice.
Looking back, ⚡️spoiler alert⚡️ I am not sure that it was THE turning point I fantasized. But, there's no disappointment. Because, what really matters is the fact that there was a growth.

A growth!

A growth that widened my view and changed my identity from A to B was the satisfying reward I earned by accepting challenge to go on a 3 months adventure. Visiting historical places, interacting with most random people, appreciating master collections at a museum, discovering new appetite, filling up pages in my sketchbook... All so diverting!
As a result, spring 2017 evolved into a memorable experience that enriched my soul, an experience worth sharing.

청춘

봄에 하는 여행

2017년 봄 유럽 여행계획을 짜면서 스케줄을 나열하기보다는 어떤 태도의 대해서 더 많은 생각을 했다.
모든 영화는 성장이라는 주제를 관통한다고 하는데 (A에서 B로 가는 과정)
시작 전 이번 여행을 한편의 영화같다고 생각하고 그 속의 나도 한층 성장하는 계기가 되기를 바랬다.
디테일에 반응하고 그런 조각조각들을 이어붙이는 것이야말로 하나의 정체성을 만들어가는 것이니까
단순히 어딜가고 무엇을 보고의 나열하는 방식보다 여행하면서 보인 사소한 것(처럼 보일수도 있지만 그것을 인식함으로서 나에게는 의미를 가지게 되는 찰나)를 포착해내는게 중요한것 같았다.
그리고 여행 도중 그런 순간들을 기록하는 프로젝트들도 해볼까하고 준비도 했지만 실행하진 못했는데...
여행도중 체력의 한계를 여러번 느끼고 감기로 고생도 하고 😔 결국 계획과는 다르게 흘러가는대로 그날그날 하고싶은대로 보내버렸다.

당시에는 프로젝트를 진행하지 못한게 속상했는데 지금 되돌아보면 여전히 나에게 기록들이 남아있다.
내 기억 속에 재미있고 소중한 추억들이 보관되어 있고 사진첩을 열어보면 그때가 새록새록 떠오른다.
무엇보다 이 경험을 통해 난 성장했고 여행 전의 나와 지금의 나는 다르다.
결과적으로 나의 청춘을 장식하는 고마운 조각이 되어준건 변함이 없다.

그리고 끝난지 거의 1년이 되어가는 그때가 하나의 스토리 텔링이 되기를.
