A Visit to Singapore Zoo

Singapore Zoo has been known for having among the most beautiful wildlife park settings in the world, where animals roam freely in open and naturalistic habitats.

image

I like Singapore Zoo, it feels like you are walking in the forest instead. You'll not see any "cage" and the animal is well taken care of.

The Singapore Zoo consists of 3 part: The Singapore Zoo (Day time), the River Safari (Day time) and Night Safari (Night time). You need to purchase ticket separately for each.

image

You'll get discount if you buy a package. Each ticket priced about SGD 30 individually. Buy 4 of them and you only need to pay for SGD 69 If you are wondering what's the 4th one, that's the Jurong Bird Park. By the way, if you buy online from the Singapore Zoo website you may get an extra discount and you don't have to queue.

Best time to go is in the morning 8.30 am, get lunch at 11am, hope to river Safari in the afternoon, followed by the night Safari in the evening.

There's an exhibition in the zoo from time to time, currently they have the Dinosaur and Reptile exhibition.

They can move their head and blink but it's difficult to take a good picture when it's crowded.

image
This is the popular spot to take picture. It's a T-REX.

This area is called the Frozen Tundra
image
And something is missing over here :( not sure where did the bear go.

Built to resemble the arctic habitat, the Frozen Tundra has a cool temperature, an ice cave with a waterfall, and a large pool filled with giant ice blocks.

Inuka, our locally-born polar bear, is the star of the Frozen Tundra. From the viewing gallery in the frozen tunnel, check out how our playful Inuka swim in the cool pool, or even chill in the ice-cold cave!

For lunch you can head to either to KFC or the Food court named "Ah Meng". I was curious about the name and looks like there's a reason for it. "Ah Meng" is actually a name of an orangutan.

Ah Meng was a female Sumatran orangutan and a tourism icon of Singapore. She was smuggled from Indonesia and kept illegally as a domestic pet before being recovered by a veterinarian in 1971. She was then eleven years old and was given a home at the Singapore Zoo.

image
It's very crowded during the lunch time, best to avoid lunch time If you want to have meal.

image
A wide selection of food.

image
You don't have to worry about drinking water in the zoo.

I'm very glad that there's water refill station around the the park.

If you visit the zoo, don't forget to check out the animal shows and feeding time. There are four shows:

  1. Splash Safari Show
  2. Animal Friends Show
  3. Elephants at Work & Play Show
  4. Rainforest Fights Back Show

For more details you can visit here for the show and here for the feeding time.

We attended the Rainforest Fight Back Show.
image

Please go early about 20 minutes before the show if you see the zoo is crowded.

From an adult perspective the show is not that interesting, they just showed couple of animal and bring awareness about the forest.

But I'm pretty sure that you'll children will love it.

image
It's good thing that they are Involving the audience and have experience with the snakes.

image
Not only one audience but the rest has a change to get close with the snakes.

image
The show ended with a beautiful white peacock spreading his feather.

image
I'm pretty happy to know that the animals are treated well in this zoo. Great job Singapore Zoo!

image
These Elephants are gentle and intelligent, I would say that they are pretty amazing except for the smell.

image

image
Pay $5 for the bananas / carrots and you can feed them and taking a selfie with them. The $5 that you've paid will be used for their welfare.

Another place that i like is the Hamadryas Baboon, they are pretty interesting animal to watch.

image

image

The Hamadryas baboon exhibit features a colony of more than 90 baboons who are some of the most fascinating animals at the Zoo. Watch as the clans engage in their social activities. From territorial males protecting their harems, to a female with very pronounced genital swelling announcing her fertile state to a fellow male, to couples eating ticks off each other’s fur, and even adults getting rough with the young, it's a primate soap opera playing out right in front of your eyes.

the other animal around there that you need to see is the Nubian Ibex.

I'm very sad when I can't see them, in my opinion there are such a magnificent animal which held their head high with a pride.

image
The Australian zone is the best place to take a rest especially if you bringing your baby with you, it's air condition and if you are like me prefer cold than warm it's like a heaven.

image
it's pretty interesting to watch how the kangaroo eat

Their long tail aids in balance, allowing kangaroos to hop at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. On hot days at Australasia, our kangaroos can be seen under the shady trees licking themselves to dissipate heat.

image
image

As their name suggests, tree kangaroos spend most of their time in trees. Unlike their ground-dwelling friends, their bodies are designed to climb! You can see them moving from branch to branch, aided by their muscular forelimbs, broad feet and curved claws. They use their long tail for balancing as they navigate in trees. In contrast to their hopping cousins, tree kangaroos do not have large and very muscular legs, which are needed for hopping. Like all kangaroos, tree kangaroos give birth to under-developed joeys which are jelly-bean- sized. Joeys nurse and continue their development in their mother’s pouch until they are ready to emerge and explore the world on their own.

if you are tired just hoop the tram to go around the zoo. if you ticket doesn't include this you can purchase the ticket on spot at $5 for unlimited ride.

image
Hippos are fun to watch especially when you can watch them swim or to be exact "walking in the water". Although the hippos spend a lot of time in the water, they can’t swim and their bodies are too dense to stay afloat.

Do you want to bring some animal home? yes you can but only the plush toy :p.

that's the end of my visit to Singapore Zoo. Singapore Zoo is one of the best zoo, it's massive, great activities you can join (feeding & shows) and there's also a kid zone, where they can splash water in the watery playground and ride horse.
