Croatia: August in Paradise

We have been to quite a few places in the world and seen many natural wonders, but in terms of beauty, the Plitvice Lakes are probably like nothing we have ever seen before. Now I understand and strongly agree with all the rankings of the TOP amazing bodies of water on our planet that use to place the Plitvice Lakes in the highest positions!

From the very childhood I used to enjoy spending time on the water's edge. Sound of running water always makes me feel happy and relaxed, so I was really excited to go to the Croatian paradise. We visited the park while on a self-drive tour through Hungary-Croatia and planned a day at this destination, arriving 1 day before. After the delicious dinner and night spent at Tourist Centar Marko Hotel in Oštarski Stanovi, where I discovered the taste of Prošek (sweet dessert wine that is traditionally from the southern area of Dalmatia), we were ready for a long walk through waterfalls, lakes, caves and streams.

We bought a one-day tickets that costed us 180 Kuna (HRK) per person and that price included already electric boat rides on Lake Kozjak, panoramic train rides, visitor insurance, VAT and so on. There are couple of routes to choose and I can recommend you “the route C”! We’ve been told that this is the one of the most beautiful ways there and indeed, the scenery was just breathtaking. After almost 6 hours of walking and admiring the views I was truly proud that I managed to control myself and didn’t jump into the one of those lakes… Each of those feature a variety of colors that are far from the usual color of water and at the same time are so clear, that you can easily see the bottom or the ducks paddling under the water mirror.

The park is possessed under the shadows of a deep forest and is very comfortable to walk even in sunny day, but please be informed that in the high season it gets crowded easily, so the earlier you get there the better. Ahh, and you have to pay for parking as well as entry if you take a car, although parking is quite cheap. There is also a long way between toilet stops, so ensure you go before you set off and at each opportunity. At the main stations in the park you will find  places with food, drinks and ice-creams at reasonable prices, so no need to take it with you, just enjoy a rest. With a bottle of water and camera to take thousands of pictures you will be fine.
