The Last Secrets of Tenerife (Part 4)

in #travel8 years ago

Finally we are going to climb the Teide Volcano (3700m) and venture into magical cloud-forest. This is the final part of a series trying to give Tenerife the appreciation it deserves.  If you missed the first three parts you may want to check them out: Part 1    Part 2   Part 3

Eventually, we spent our entire trip on Tenerife alone and were absolutely captivated. Today I'd even go so far as to say that no other place on earth has such unique diversity of landscapes within such a small geographical area. Black-sanded beaches, rugged mountains, a volcanic desert and ever-moist cloud forests all within an hours drive.

This series covers 24 unique places on Tenerife Island in random order. Here are the last six.

Full information about any place listed can be found on my open source travel guide backtotheroutes.com

19. Pico del Teide (Teide National Park)

Can you climb the highest mountain of Spain at a breathtaking altitude of 3700 meters? Start on the gentle slopes and pass the famous 'Huevos del Teide' which are giant volcanic bombs once spit by Mt. Teide, explore a hidden ice cave and spend a night in the refuge at 3200m just to wake up early enough to be up before dawn. Enjoy massive views of the Canarian Archipelago and see Teide's shadow cast on La Gomera Island. Out of this world.

20. Laurisilva Cloud Forest (Anaga Mountains - North East)

You want Rainforest? Here you go - endemic laurisilva forest that today only exists on the Canaray Islands. It's super wet and it's super magic.

21. Camino del Risco (Teno Mountains, North West)

As spectacular as it can be. Descend from the high plain of the Teno mountains down to the ocean. How can rocks be so colorful and elegantly carved?

22. Arenas Negras Portillo (Teide National Park)

You don't feel like climbing Teide? Take this short hike and experience the beauty of the Teide NP. Black-sanded volcanic sand contrasts with red, green and yellow.

23. Piscina Natural Bajamar (North East)

The ocean is too wild for you? Take it easy and enjoy a free swim in this supervised pool filled with seawater.

24. Playa La Caleta (West)

This beach is the most elusive of all. Only reachable by foot you find golden sand, friendly hippies living in makeshift huts and incredible views of La Gomera. Check out backtotheroutes.com to get there.
