The display over Niagara Falls is one of the longest-running fireworks shows in the world. Illuminating the falls has taken place for over a hundred years, and the regular displays began in 1994 when the first Fireworks over the Falls show was featured. A single fireworks show can take hours for a qualified three-member crew to set up all the firing tubes along the Niagara River shoreline. Fireworks over the Falls runs throughout most of the year, typically on a regular run from May until early January (weather permitting). Typical Fireworks over the Falls schedule will have shows every Friday and Sunday night in these months along with public holidays. Other events and festivals in Niagara work in tandem with the fireworks shows – the Coca-Cola Concert Series, for example, stages free concerts with the pyrotechnics as a backdrop between May and October.

Contrary to belief, fireworks continue and even thrive during the winter season, thanks to the Winter Festival of Lights from November until January every year. The fireworks start earlier and extra fireworks displays are often arranged. Of course, this includes the iconic New Year’s show, capping off the biggest NYE celebration in Canada.

A typical fireworks season in Niagara will feature eighty-one shows. There are numerous vantage points on both sides of the border – in New York onlookers can view the show from a range of options including Prospect Point or the state park, and those on Canadian soil can pick one of several observation points along Queen Victoria Park, the Table Rock Welcome Centre or the crow’s-nest view of Skylon Tower.
