Flying monasteries of Greece. Part two: in the footsteps of Super Agent 007 (+12 photo)

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

I continue the story about the unique monument of nature and the abode of monks, soaring high in the air Meteor.

I have already told you about the inaccessibility of monasteries. And it was this fact and the stunning beauty of the local landscape that attracted the crew of the film about James Bond, the super agent 007. Here in 1981, near the Holy Trinity Monastery, the footage of the film "For Your Eyes Only" with Roger Moore in the title role was shot. You can re-watch the movie and see these beautiful places. But for the filming of the monastery special decorations were built, because the real monks of Meteora did not allow shooting inside the monastery.

But I visited the monastery of the Holy Trinity and show you a few shots of the life of monks. The monastery itself is much more modest than the Great Meteor, which I described in the previous post.

There is a small garden with fruit trees, which is amazing for such a height. The area is very well maintained and cozy.

A miniature temple with beautiful frescoes and icons, which can accommodate no more than ten people. Along its walls are elegant carved chairs, you can retire here and in complete silence to think about the eternal. In the temple there is a person who closely watches that visitors do not take pictures of the room inside.

From the monastery of the Holy Trinity, you have a stunning view of the valley, the gorge with the river bed and villages located at the foot of the rocks.

On the territory of each monastery there is a white stone cross. At night, all six crosses (according to the number of functioning monasteries) are highlighted, denoting the tops of the Meteor.

Most tourists who come to visit Meteor stop in the nearby small town of Kalambaka or in the village of Kastraki. They have long been transformed into tourist centers with hotels, restaurants and all the necessary infrastructure. In the city there is an icon painting workshop, the inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and folk crafts. But the main source of income for local residents are, of course, millions of tourists and pilgrims who come to Meteor all year round.

And here I am - enjoy the amazing views of Meteor. Hello! ))))))

Природа очень красивая!!!

Спасибо, да, прекрасное место, а воздух там какой...
Рисунок гор сегодня запостила )

Cool post!

I like the idea that there are sacred areas too precious to be photographed. It makes a person want to be there.

I like the way your photos give a sense of being above the town. They project altitude. Because I have a fear of heights it makes me a little weak in the knees.

I found your post because it was shared in the Post-Spot. You can learn more using this SafeLink here.

Hi! Thank you for your comment. I sometimes fear heights too, but in these mountains there is no fear, very reliable ladders from a stone are made. Today I placed my drawing of mountains, I invite you to look it...

Thanks for the repost!

I guess I'd better take you up on your suggestion and watch For Your Eyes Only again because I don't remember much of it all, including the monastery. Or is that the one Bond has to climb the sheer rock wall to get to up there with the Greek business guy? Okay, maybe it's kind of coming back to me. Still probably should watch it. :)

Stunning views. Greece, Spain and Italy are some of the places I wouldn't mind visiting some day, and Meteor looks like an awesome place to go. Have things pretty much calmed down there from the reported economic crises (speaking of Greece in general)?

Very well done. Thanks for sharing.

I was scared by the presence of migrants in Athens, I have a post about it. Otherwise, I did not see the crisis. Very calm and cheerful country. Nice prices on hotels and meals. And of course the beauty of nature allows us not to notice the small problems that exist here, as in any other country.

What would you say scared you the most about the migrants? In your post you mention seeing some and that they looked dejected. Wanting to work, but not being able to obtain it. Did that mean they were homeless, basically out on the streets, and how many were there? And from where? In the US, we have people coming in from all over, but the ones who tend to come in the most are coming from Mexico and points south.

The locals of Athens told me that there are a lot of migrants. There are only a few expensive streets where there are none. The streets where they live are not clean, there are not lights, they stand in groups and see you. I was scared. I think that migrants cannot get a good job and have to do everything to survive...

This is just so gorgeous! I have to check out your previous post. I'm curious, do you know if the place called Meteor because of the rock formation?

From the Greek word Meteora means soaring in the sky. The emphasis is placed on the second syllable. There are many more stories about Greece, it is an amazing country. Looking for inspiration to write a new post )

I see. Very cool. Thank you. I borrowed a Greek word in setting up a venture ww.SoulArist.com , Arist from the word aristi, meaning excellence. I've been meaning to write a out this, but haven't quite gotten around to it. Will do soon.

Oh with such rich cultural heritage, I'm sure you will find plenty! :)

I visited your site, I liked how it was made!

Thank you. :)
