Tsingy national park
The Tsingy de Bemaraha Comprehensive Nature Reserve is located in the western center of the Province of Mahajanga, Madagascar. Its unique geology, well-preserved mangrove forests and its rich fauna of lemurs, birds, chameleons and other species motivated its inclusion in the World Heritage by Unesco in 1990.
The area is especially notable for its tsingy or pinnacles of limestone rock, lapiaces so extremely sharp that they can inflict serious wounds on an unprepared visitor. They have been formed thanks to the rains (annual average of 1,800 mm) that dissolve the limestone rock forming these sharp edges. It is dangerous, and often impossible, to travel among the tsingy, except for the agile lemurs and other representatives of the local fauna.
