Dazzling Amsterdam : The NDSM-wharf
The NDSM-wharf was a shipyard in the northern part of Amsterdam. It was used to build and repair ships and heavy machinery.
It was in operation from 1894 to 1979. Nowadays it has found a new destination as a cultural playground.

This is one of the two main buildings on the wharf. The inside has a very industrial feel to it and several artists have built a studio in there. It looks like a little village in there:
But there's more art to be found. The wharf is loved by graffiti-artists, who make sure that the appearance of the shipyard is constantly changing:
The wharf also holds two hotels, one is the Double Tree by Hilton, the other looks like this:
It's a floating hotel and the letters on top are suites, you can spend the night in there!
The wharf also holds a couple of bars and restaurants: two of them really stand out:
This is "Noorderlicht", a laid-back cosy place where you can eat good food, with a fantastic view over the river IJ (check out my previous post Dazzling Amsterdam : the IJ for more info)
And this is one of the hottest places to be seen in Amsterdam. It's called Pllek and their terrace is situated on the south, so you can sunbathe all day long while enjoying cocktails and/or excellent food. They also serve a variety of (local) ales and beers.
With so much to do, you can easily spend a couple of hours or even a full day on the wharf. But that's not all! The wharf has a 365-day agenda full of activities, like several music festivals, concerts, expositions and a lot more.
You can check out the program on http://www.ndsm.nl/

Another interesting post. That artist village looks amazing. There is something to be said for good graffiti artists when it comes to improving a landscape.
Happy to provide! My next post on Dazzling Amsterdam will be about the Dam Square.
