Street art in Berlin

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Berlin can, with its constantly present vibrant energy, impress you on a completely different level than most other cities. Due to the high concentration of various events, art galleries, museums and infinite ways to experience nightlife, it is likely that you will feel ecstatic during the stay. What also contributes to the vividness of the city is the everyday flux of travellers, an extremely high percentage of young inhabitants (about 40% of people are under 35 years old) and street art in different forms.

The two main districts where colorful city walls, covered with graffiti, paste-ups, sculptures and so on can be found, are Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. Free graffiti tours (tip-based), guided by young people, are available in this area. I highly recommend attending one, since I had a great experience with an entertaining guide.

On the photo above, we can see paste-ups of two artists. The dancing girls are work of a French artist that goes by the nickname SOBR. The girls can be found in many places in Berlin and are usually accompanied with the slogan "It's time to dance", which is to a great extent connected to the city - nightlife, partying, having fun.
The girl next to them is Little Lucy, which is El Bocho's work. Little Lucy tends to torture her cat and is always very original in finding new ways of doing it. Here, she tore her head off, but as you pay attention when strolling around, you might come across paste-ups of her cooking the cat in a pot, drowning her in water and so on.

This is work of Alice Pasquini. What is interesting about Alice is that she makes graffiti during daytime and unlike other graffiti artists, who use nicknames, uses her real name. Her motives are positive and non-provocative and therefore do not pose a problem to the authorities.
