Travel blog: ---EASTER ISLAND--- A hidden and mysterious gem!

A few years ago i visited Easter Island (rapa nui is what the people there call it). Actually i was visiting Chile and was crazy enough to fly 6 extra hours to this amazing Island, one of the most remote places on this earth!

Easter Island is part of Chile but more then 3000km away from the main land, situated in the southeastern Pacific Ocean.

Polynesian people most likely settled on Easter Island sometime between 700 and 1100 AD and created a thriving and industrious culture as evidenced by the island's numerous enormous stone moai and other artifacts.

However, human activity, the introduction of the Polynesian rat and overpopulation led to gradual deforestation and extinction of natural resources which severely weakened the Rapa Nui civilization.

Today Easter Island is one of those places people dream of to visit, it felt really special going there. Thats why i was extremely surprised that it was so quiet, as soon as you leave town (its just a small town) you have the feeling you are all alone on the Island.
I would advise people to rent a car so you can actually discover the Island and all of its special places instead of going on a tour, the Island isnt that big and it gives you a feeling of total freedom.
The coast line is absolutely beautiful and you will see wild horses all over the Island...stunning!

When i arrived at one of the famous statue locations ...i was alone, i expected bus loads of people, but there was nobody but me. It felt like i was dreaming! (first picture)

While driving along the coast you will see numerous statues, each of those places will give you thrills again, it was so much more then i expected.

Another place that i really reccomend to visit is Orongo, a stone village and ceremonial centre at the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui. I went there by foot, a serious walk (especially cos it was very hot weather back then and some steep climbs)
On your way to Orongo you will see a beautiful volcano crater that literallyblew me away, nature at its best!!

From a cliff side you can see the little Island next to the main. That Island is famous for the Tangata Manu (bird man)race:

The history tells that the strongest men would swim all the way to the other Island to find the first bird egg, the winner would receive gifts and food and his clan having sole rights to collect that season's harvest of wild bird eggs.
It was a very dangerous mission, the sea is very wild and the rocks extremely steep!

There is so much more to discover on the Island, i would recomend staying there for atleast 3-4 days. Its not a place with luxurious hotels, shopping malls or expensive restaurants...its still very pure and i hope it will stay that way.
If you are planning to go there, or would like more information, feel free to ask me!

Also, since im new to steemit, please resteem my post so more people can enjoy it. I dont have so many followers yet!

Going to a popular tourist destination and not encountering people is probably one of the best things you'll experience while traveling. Lucky you for being able to experience that.
