Leaving Texas and Crossing Into Mexico

in #travel7 years ago

After taking the Megabus to San Antonio, Texas from the Dallas Station I began my journey.

I had made prior arrangements with a couple from Couchsurfing in San Antonio.

This couple was excited to host me so I could dog sit for the weekend while they visited family out of town.

On that Saturday night (April 29th) another Couchsurfer who really wanted to meet me based on my Couchsurfing profile, came to visit.

She brought many things to welcome me to San Antonio and to support me in my fresh adventure.

Here, she brought with her two other Couchsurfing travelers, a woman riding her bike across the US, Caleb, and her husband.

This is Caleb.

He has traveled all over Mexico so he told me to join the Facebook group Mochileras en Mexico.

So I did.
Then I made a post, telling my story.

Within 24 hours I had over 2000 Likes and over 200 comments.
Many, many invitations all around Mexico to come visit their beautiful cities.

I have been overwhelmed.

Whatever we are told about Mexico being scary and dangerous is just not true.

It's NOT TRUE!

These people love their country and have a pride like I have never ever seen in Americans.

My beautiful new friends brought food and conversation sprinkled with hugs and laughter.

We feasted.

On our way to Mexico!

Now this beautiful new Couchsurfing friend is driving me over the border and into Mexico from San Antonio.

There it is! The border of the United States and Mexico behind us.

We crossed the river! Yippee!

The border was so crowded that it took us an hour and a half to drive a 1/4 mile.

This is my Couchsurfing connection in Nuevo Laredo.

This family was awesome!!

They had only joined couchsurfing for 5 days when I sent in a Couch Request. It felt great to be so welcomed.

Their first Couchsurfing experience was very exciting to them.
They made sure I was fed and comfortable at all times.
When I left I had a great list of places to visit in Mexico.

This is the oldest daughter's bedroom. She gave gave it up to me for the two nights I was there. Clean and comfortable, plenty of space.

These two met me in Monterrey at the Greyhound bus station in response to my Facebook post on the backpackers group stating that I would be there.

Quickly, they ordered us a taxi, escorted me safely to my hostel then walked me for maybe half a mile through downtown Monterrey to get dinner.

This is his place to eat as he was excited show off his favorite shop for tortas.

It was worth the walk.

This bread was fresh baked and the sandwich or torta was loaded with cheese, meat and avocados.

I ate half of it, wrapped up the other half and saved it for my late night snack.
We took a taxi back to the hostel and capped off the night by exchanging hugs and bid one another good night.

Currently I am with a group of experienced backpacker Mexican hippy guys who are taking great care of me.
My next blog will address how they are supporting me...the next part of my unfolding story.
