Epic Food Journey Through Latin America: Mezcal and Tequila for Breakfast in Huautla de Jimenez, Mexico

in #travel7 years ago

I was still working on my morning coffee and Mexican pastries

when my host in the mountains of Mexico

breaks out the Tequila then the Mezcal.

"Let's get the Gringa Drunk" was a fun game for him.

Almost never a day goes by that someone does not ask me

if I have tried Mezcal.

Tequila is for sale everywhere but no one asks me about it.

The Mezcal I drank this day, I understand is boot-legged.

They tell me that Tequila is only made
with the Blue Agave plant

but the Mezcal can be made with

more than a couple dozen varieties of the Agave plant.

Tequila is an industrialized product but the Mezcal production

is considered more

"artisanal"

due to the many possible varieties.

It is baked underground with wood which imparts a smoky flavor

and is almost always produced locally in small batches.

The flavor, for me, was
much, much smoother
than the tequila.

Now, I realize I must try the Mezcal everywhere I go.

One Mezcal is not the the same as all of them,

unlike the industrialized Tequila.

After breakfast I was escorted out back

where he showed me something he is really proud of.

Check out my next blog for the details.

Just a little bit of advice. If you want your participation score to increase then you must refrain from Facebook type comments. Quality is more important than quantity.

100% Blue agave for me thanks! :D
