Mexico City !! Top 10 Things to see and do when you are there! NR. 6-10

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Intro: Mexico is a huge city with almost 25 million inhabitants.

If somebody is asking me about it I usually say: It has a lot of culture - museums/concerts/theater ,  good food - excelente cuisine /restaurants & bars, markets - wonderful handcraft and education - best universities of the country  to offer.

It is actually the biggest Spanish speaking city on the world and the oldest one at the American continent.

The city is surrounded by volcanos (the most popular ones are Popocatépetl & Iztaccíhuatl) and mountains and is located at an altitud of ca. 2200 meters over the sea level.

on the left: Iztaccíhuatls

on the right: Popocatépetl

Before the Spanish conquered Mexico, this place was actually the location of Tenochtitlán - the Aztecs capital.. build on the lake Texcoco. The Spanish destroyed it and filled up the lake more and more... building their own city above.

So this city is pretty interesting and has a lot to offer! For me it was the first culture shock ever arriving there, all by myself - sweet 19 years old in 2011 and awesome to come back now that I am actually leaving this country.

I love it!!! So much things to do and see!!!

So at my last post Mexico City !! Top 10 Things to see and do when you are there! NR. 1-5 I already told you about:

#1 Teotihuacán - #2 Tenochtitlán - #3 Chapultepec Park - #4 Biking on Reforma - #5 National Museum of Anthropology

We go on with a pretty nice part of the city:

#6 La Condesa

This is one of the most beautiful parts of the city. It is mainly known for really good food from all over the world and counts a lot of cafés, libraries, restaurants, galleries, boutiques. It also offers a great cultural scene and nightlife.

On top of it it has 2 beautiful parks to walk in :)

#7  Zócalo / Historic City Center

Every city in Latin America has a Zócalo (Main place) in the city center. That is usually the place where the Spanish started to build the city. It always has a Church, City Hall and most of the most important buildings of a city.

In Mexico it is just where Templo Mayor (of Tenochtitlán used to be). So they destroyed the Aztec temples and used most of the stones to build their Churches, houses etc.

Parts of the Center used to be Texcoco lake before... the Spanish filled it up and started to construct on top of it. With the time a lot of buildings started to sink in the ground. Today most of them have their entrances where there used to be windows or stairs down to get into the building. The Historic Center contains most of the city's historic sites from both eras as well as a large number of museums. This has made it a World Heritage Site.

Every day in Mexico the military will put the Mexican flag in the morning and put it down at night. That is how it looks like

#8 Museum Frida Kahlo

"Mexico is like always, unorganized and devil given. The only thing left is the enormous beauty of the Indians world." -Frida Kahlo

I guess most of you already know the story of Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter. She grow up right where you can find the Frida Kahlo museum today at the blue house. There you can see how she grew up and admire some of her paintings exhibited.

Most of her paintings are self portraits or Inspired by Mexican popular culture. She was exploring  questions of identity, gender, postcolonialism, class, and race in Mexican society. In her work she often mixed up fantasy with realism and put autobiographical elements.

You find also part of Diego Rivieras work since they where married and lived together in this house from 1929 - 1954.

#9 San Ángel Market

San Ángel market is a very special market. You can get every kind of handcraft from paintings till blankets here. They import all kind of handcraft from Guadalajara to Oaxaca and Guatemala. Best place to go shopping!

#10 UNAM University

National Autonomous University of Mexico  is the largest university in Latin America! People are coming there to study from all over the world! Great spot to be :)
