The memorial complex Brest fortress

Brest fortress is one of the greatest monuments of world war II. It's a real symbol of the heroic resistance of the defenders of our homeland. This is an example of steadfastness and courage of the defenders, which I say with pride to our days. The fortress is located on four Islands. The main defense is located on the island of the Citadel, it is a barracks with two floors. Between the Islands, with parts of the Brest fortress, connected by bridges.

The beginning of construction of the castle falls on the first decades of the 18th century. Then was built as a defensive tower to protect the city. 30 years of the 19th century, major construction continued, and in 1842 its Bastion defended the Russian Empire. But the strengthening and modernization of the it lasted until 1914.

During the First world terrain with the fortress was owned by Germany, then it became part of the lands of Poland, and only in 1939, by agreement back in the USSR. Speaking of her history, we cannot forget the feat of 9000 soldiers of the red Army, the defenders, who remained for rest in Belarus.

Struggle against the Nazi troops were among the first, they fought, but the forces were unequal. Germany had planned to take the fortress by noon. That is, almost a few hours after the treacherous attack.. For the first few hours of battle, killed almost half of our soldiers. It was destroyed by the water, warehouses and almost all the armor. The surviving soldiers had to split into small groups, and thus to repel the enemy. Women and children who were in the cellars were removed and immediately captured.

The fortress was locked, but the soldiers did not give up! They managed to rebuff! The remaining defenders down in the basement, the conditions were awful, people were fighting without food and water while under constant bombardment. To announce the capture of the Brest fortress, the German command turned out, only at the end of August 1941.

The remains of the White Palace is located in the left part of the complex. Under its collapsed roof killed the last defenders. Here was discovered, in the middle 50 years of the famous stone with the inscription: "Die hard!".
