Golubac Fortress [eng/срп] Голубачки град

Our small team had a sudden chance yesterday, on March 8^th, to visit ancient fortress of Golubac, located at the gates of Djerdap Gorge. But this time we run out of luck. Fortress is under reconstruction, and visits were suspended when we got there.

This is the best possible place to control land and water ways through the Djerdap Gorge. Strategic importance of these cliffs at the right bank of Danube was spotted first by Romans, who made the first settlement there far before stony towers that are now reconstructed. It’s name at that time was Columbaria.

Early history of Golubac is uncertain. Since the beggining of IX Century, until 1257. it belonged to the Bulgarian and Byzantinian Empires, and from there to the Ottoman conquest in the 15th century, it belonged mainly to Serbian Empire. Stone walls of the Upper compound with a built-in Orthodox chapel point that it, at least, was built by a local noble. The first known record of Golubac is in Hungarian sources from 1335, when it was occupied by Hungarian military, and there is a general agreement that the majority of the fortress was built early in the XIV Century.

So, this time we just manage to show you a few images of this magnificent fortification from the outside. We are hoping we will have a chance to visit it again soon, and bring here images from the inside, and some views of Djerdap Gorge from the fortress itself.
