Donau, Denyub, Dong, Dunarea, Danube, Danuvius and Istres are names of the same river, the name of which of the Danube. It originates in the center of Europe and crosses the continent from west to east. By its length, among other great European river Danube is second only to the Volga. Danube is increasingly referred to as "a symbol of European integration." The first historical information about the Danube reaches us from ancient times. Name the river gave the Celts, they lived on its shores in the first half of the first millennium BC. They named her Danuvius, which means "fast water" The ancient Greeks called Istres. The Romans created a military fleet of river and built along the right bank of 80 fortifications. Later, these fortresses and settlements were established in cities such as Vienna (Vindobona), Belgrade (Singidinum), Budapest (Aquincum), Linz (Lehtinen), Passau (Castro Batavia), Regensburg (Castra-Regina).
Danube Biosphere Reserve

Officially considered the beginning of the Danube eastern slopes of the Black Forest, where in the vicinity of Donaueschingen (Germany) at an altitude of 678 meters above sea level merge two mountain creek - Breg and Brig. The distance from the zero point to that point is 2845 kilometers.
However, in all sorts of reference books and encyclopedias, and the other is - 2888 kilometers. The total length of the river to the source of the stream Breg, which is farthest distant from the place of the confluence of the Danube to the Black Sea. The dispute about where to actually originates the Danube, has been going on for hundreds of years :))
Danube Delta
In the lower Danube flow, branching forms extensive cut by a dense network of canals, marshy delta length from east to west and 75 kilometers wide from north to south 65 km. As these three Danube distributaries seep through the delta, they fragment into many small waterways that feed numerous swamps and lakes. Sediment from the river combines with sand from the sea to create massive sandbanks and islands. There is a natural development of the Danube delta. Its area has increased more than fourfold. In recent decades, the Kilia delta of growth has slowed significantly. On the maps, published twenty years ago, there is no mention of the land to the south of the island Lebedinka. Today, separated from Lebedinki shallow ducts, in the Danube delta grown another island, the youngest landmass in Europe. The island is called the New Earth.
