Visiting the Temenos of Artemidoros in Santorini, Greece
Hello friends,
Today I will talk about the Temenos of Artemidoros I visited in Santorini. I will also display some pictures of the beautiful sunset I watched at Oia.
The Temenos (sanctuary) of Artemidoros is located high up on the mountain, offering a bird's eye view of the land below. It is a strenuous exercise visiting this place under the hot summer sun, but the views are quite rewarding. It was founded in the mid 3rd century B.C. by the priest Artemidoros Apollonios, driven by a dream he saw in his sleep.
The sanctuary was chiseled out of the rock by Artemidoros himself. Altars, reliefs and numerous inscriptions cover the face of the rock, as well as symbols of the gods worshiped; an eagle for Zeus, a lion for Apollo, a dolphin for Poseidon. The set is completed by the portrait of Artemidoros wearing a wreath; in the surrounding inscription he expresses his wish that his name remains immortal in eternity (1).
After the sanctuary we went to Oia, one of the most charming villages in Santorini. It is some sort of tradition in Santorini to go to Oia to see the sun set, and there are a lot of tourists waiting with cameras at hand. I was one of them.
Admittedly, it was a beautiful sunset. The people were cheering and clapping at the end. Personally, I preferred the sunset I watched from the boat of the volcano tour, but this was fun too.
I hope you liked my post today. Have a good day and speak to you soon!
