The beautiful pavilions of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul, Turkey

in #travel8 years ago

Hello friends,

Today I will talk about the beautiful pavilions of Topkapi Palace. I will start with the Baghdad Kiosk. The Baghdad Kiosk (Bağdad Köşkü) was built in 1639 to commemorate the Baghdad campaign of Sultan Murat IV.

The Arabic script with large white letters on a blue background that you see inside the building are Koran verses. The pavilion’s cabinets with mother of pearl, tortoiseshell and ivory inlaid wooden doors contained the books endowed by Sultan Abdülhamit I and Sultan Selim I (1).

The gilded İftar Pavilion (İftariye Köşkü) was built by Sultan Ibrahim. The Sultans reportedly had the custom to make their iftar (break their fast) during Ramadan at the İftar Pavilion, hence the name İftariye Kiosk. They also watched from here the sporting events performed on the yard below (2).

The Circumcision Room (Sünnet Odası) is thought to have been built during the reign of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. This pavilion is referred to as Circumcision Room, due to the fact that it was the venue used for the circumcision, a religious tradition that was performed on the princes for cleanliness and purity (3).

Adjacent to the The Circumcision Room is a marble terrace with a quaint little fountain:

And that's the end of this post. I hope you liked it, and that you will follow me to the next one. Have a good day and speak to you soon! Cheerio!

thank you bleujay! i think they are a bit dark, as it was winter. i wish they had more light in them.

You did catch a lovely reflection on the marble terrace/pavillion. However, considering the subject perhaps the lack of lighting is apropos.
