Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany
Good day friends.
My fourth day in Berlin I visited the amazing Pergamon Museum, situated on the Museum Island in Berlin. The Pergamon Museum houses two original-sized reconstructions from the parts of two monuments transported from Turkey (the Pergamon Altar of Zeus and the Market Gate of Miletus), as well as a reconstruction of the Ishtar Gate of Babylon. The Pergamon Altar was built by of Greek King Eumenes II from about 166 to 156 BC, on the acropolis of the ancient Greek city of Pergamon near the modern city Bergama in Turkey. The base of the altar is decorated with a frieze showing the battle between the Giants and the Olympian gods known as the Gigantomachy. The second important reconstruction in the museum is the Market Gate of Miletus. It was built in the 2nd century AD, most likely during 120 to 130 AD, in ancient Miletus, near the modern village of Balat in Turkey. You can read about it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_Gate_of_Miletus.
The Ishtar Gate, the third large reconstruction of the museum, was constructed in about 575 BC by King Nebuchadnezzar II in Babylon near modern Hillah in Iraq, about 85 kilometers south of Baghdad. You can read more about it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishtar_Gate
There was a lot of people in the museum, and quite difficult to take a picture of just the monument, but I found one on the web.
If you ever visit Berlin, consider buying a Berlin Pass. It gives you free entry to various attractions like the Pergamon Museum and Madame Tussauds, a one day hop-on-hop-off bus tour ticket, and unlimited travel in central Berlin. You will save a lot of money. I bought mine at the shop near the Brandeburg Gate, but you can have it shipped to you, or collect it in Berlin.
And that was my fourth day in Berlin. During the night I would still visit places, as there is so much to see in Berlin.
Back at the hostel, as we were coming up to the New Year, there was a lot of people coming for Silvester (german word for New Year's Eve), like a Japanese lady touring Europe, an Australian IT consultant, and a Chinese university debate group. It was fun meeting new people every day, even though the queue to the bathroom in the morning was building up.
