[Introduction of Korean cities] Gangneung

This time I will take the place called Gangneung in Korea.

◎ Location & history

---

• Gangneung is a city in the middle of the eastern coast of Gangwon Province in the Republic of Korea.

• It has been an important city of Gangwon Province since ancient times, and has many cultural assets and tourist attractions.

• Recently, the ice-skating competition was held during the 2018 Winter Olympics and related facilities can be visited.

◎ Sightseeing spots

• "Oukjeon" is a representative historical site of Gangneung area, which became famous in relation to Yulgok Lee, a college professor of Joseon Dynasty.

• "Gangneung Hangkyo" was built before the 1,300s, but it played a pivotal role in the local education,

• "Gyeongpodae" is a pavilion on the northern hill of Gyeongpoho Lake and is famous for its scenic beauty.

◎ Specialties & Festivals

• The "Sunrise Festival" is very popular every year due to the geographical advantages of the East Coast. Due to the belief that good things can happen when looking at the first sunrise of the New Year, many people attend the festival early in the year.

• "Dano Festival" is an event to commemorate Dano during the Korean holiday, and Gangneung is very famous as a festival related to it.

• Gangneung is famous for its "Chodang-Sundubu". Dubu(tofu) made in a different way from traditional dubu(tofu) is very good.
