I got lost, took the wrong turning and discovered a small temple by the river.

The other day I wanted to visit an old temple by the river but I took the wrong turning. So, I took a left turning into a narrow lane which had enough space for only one car. So, I had to pray very hard for my smooth passage through this narrow tunnel. Luckily I emerged into a small courtyard with just enough space for parking one more car. Phew! That was close. But I realised I was in the wrong place.

I was standing in a very small temple surrounded by a community of working class people who had migrated from the provinces in the countryside to seek work and better future in Bangkok at least a generation ago. Their ancestors usually settled down in simple shacks on land belonging to temples out side city center. Over the years, these people became prosperous so new bricks and concrete or wooden houses replaced the old shanty town look.

These people were the source of cheap labour and cheap food on wheels which made it possible for the smooth running of industrialisation and modernisation of Bangkok during the last fifty years. These are also the source of political support or voters for some political parties who passed law to give these communities their legal rights on the land.

Not very far from this small temple, a new condominium has almost finished and ready for buyers to move in. There had been a spree of buying undeveloped land along the river bank by investors and companies during the last twenty years. Now many new luxurious condos could be seen dotted along the river during my boat trip. The contrast between the old simple houses and new condo towers always gave me a sense of foreboding.

สัปดาห์ก่อนเราอยากไปเที่ยววัดเก่าแก่ ที่อยู่ติดริมแม่นํ้าเจ้าพระยา แต่เราหลงทางและเลี้ยวผิดแยก ทำให้เราหาทางกลับไปไม่ได้ เราก็เลยตัดสินใจว่าจะเที่ยววัดแรกที่เจอข้างทาง เราเลี้ยวเจ้าไปในซอยแคบๆ ที่รถไปได้ที่ละคัน เราโชคดีมากที่ไม่มีรถยนต์สวนออกมา เราก็เดาว่ามันต่องมีทางไปหาที่กลับรถได้ แต่ก็ไม่ค่อยแน่ใจเท่าไร ก็ลองเข้าไปตามถนนแคบๆ แล้วไปโผล่ตรงลานแคบๆหน้าโบสถ์เล็กๆ ตรงนั้นพอมีที่ให้เราจอดรถได้พอดี มีคนแก่นั่งเฝ้าอยู่ เราก็ถามทางที่จะไปวัดที่เรามีอยู่ในใจ เขาก็บอกว่าเราขับเลยมาไกลมาก เราก็ถามหาทางเดินไปท่าน้ำไปถ่ายรูปแม่น้ำ แดดร้อนจัดมากเพราะเป็นเวลาหลังเที่ยง แต่อากาศโปร่งมากเพราะ มีลมมาจากแม่นํ้าตลอดเวลา ข้างๆชุมชนแออัดรอบวัดนี้ มีคอนโดใหม่กำลังจะสร้างใกล้เสร็จแล้ว มันช่างเป็นภาพที่ขัดหูขัดตาจริงๆ ความแตกต่างระหว่างบ้านของคนธรรมดาในชุมชนข้างวัด กับชีวิตหรูของคนชั้นกลางที่มีรายได้สูงกว่ามาก

I could sense that the river was not far away and the string fresh breeze must be from the river. After a short walk I found a small pier by the river. There were local people’s boats around the make-shift shelter. Several houses were built on wooden stilts just above the high tide level. I guessed these houses would be flooded in rainy season as the massive volume of water came down from the north. The energy was so good that I could not believe what I was experiencing. The power of quietly flowing water under the strong sunshine coupled with fresh strong wind. I could sit there on the pier till the evening. But I knew I was intruding onto local people’s private lives. Their sitting room windows were only a few meters away from me. How lucky they are to be in contact with natural forces everyday.

เราหาทางเดินไปที่ท่าน้ำอีกประมาณห้านาที เราก็เจอทางเดินไปสู่แม่น้ำ แถวนั้นเต็มไปด้วยบ้านที่สร้างกินที่ริมฝั่งจนลงไปในแม่น้ำ บรรยากาศริมนํ้ามากทีเดียว แผ่นนํ้าไหลมาเงียบๆแต่ทรงพลัง พระอาทิตย์อผ่แสงแรงมาก แต่ลมพัดโกรกแรงจนทำให้ เราอยากนั่งที่ท่าน้ำจนตกเย็น แต่บ้านเรือนของคนแถวนี้เปิดหน้าต่างออกสู่แม่น้ำ ทำให้เรารู้ว่าเขาคุยอะไรกัน เราคงไม่อยากอยู่แถวนั้นนานไป แต่เราก็อดอิจฉาที่เขามีบ้านติดริมแม่นำ้ที่มีบรรยากาศดีมาก

I was so glad that I got lost and found this little corner along the river. Local people were very friendly and easy going with a lost stranger who intruded into their community. That small pier by the river was the best spot for lunching with a picnic basket and a chilled bottle of red wine for watching the sunset. I would have to get another friend who doesn’t like alcoholic drink with me next time.
