Kama Travels #2 - Penang Street Art and Restaurants

in #travel7 years ago

Hello Steemians

This post will follow my last 3 posts about our month in Malaysia and I will talk about our time in the beautiful island city of Penang. We visited Penang for a week before heading to Langkawi and spent our time mainly in Georgetown which is the historic section of Penang. Georgetown is famous for being the first place the British ever settled in Southeast Asia and the downtown core is a designated UNESCO site. The city was declared a British colony in 1867 and was such until it was taken by the Japanese in WWII, after the war the British re captured it. In 1957, Georgetown was declared a city by Queen Elizabeth and became the first city in Malaysia's modern history. Today, Georgetown is a major tourist hub for Malaysia and many, like us, flock there to see the beautiful architecture, admire the street art, and taste the wonderful foods of modern Malaysia.

Penang and Georgetown

We spent most of our time wandering the streets of Georgetown soaking up as much of the city and culture as we could. Most of the streets in the core of the city are designed in a more traditional European style, with squares, churches and mosques all over and it is quite a wonderful city to just stroll through. There are loads of new trendy cafes everywhere and we spent more than one afternoon enjoying a coffee and watching the world pass by, it was wonderful.

We had so much fun here

Street Art in Georgetown

As I said before, one of the big tourist draws in Georgetown is the street art, done by both foreign and local artists. The street art movement in Georgetown really grew into what it is today in 2012 during the George Town Festival when Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic created a series of 6 wall paintings depicting local culture, inhabitants and lifestyles. Since then the city is slowly being covered in beautiful murals and it really enhances the feeling in the city, it is so nice to see art becoming such an integral part of the society here.

No Smoking! Actually smoking is forbidden inside the city's core but it is not enforced sadly

There are a lot of nice Italian restaurants in town but we chose this one and it was sooo good. My boyfriend loves pizza and I ordered the spaghetti.

Little India

Georgetown, like most Malaysian cities, has a large population of Indian people working there and as such there is a community in the center of the core called Little India. We came to this neighborhood to eat but were drawn in by the bright colors, amazing smells, and wonderful smiling people that filled the street. If you ever visit Georgetown make a point to head to this district because it really is a wonderful little slice of India.

We also visited a vegetarian Thali restaurant, it was so cheap and so many amazing flavors on one plate

Love Lane

Another place worth checking out is Love Lane, its a small avenue off of the main street that is packed with small cafes and patisseries. Whenever the rain hit we headed down here for some good coffee and a little peace and quiet.

We had a couple days of intense rain but it wasn't so bad, however we were always nervous to be caught in the rain so we didn't rent a motorbike to explore the rest of the island

All in all, our time in Georgetown was very memorable and I would love to go back for another visit someday and explore more of the island. I hope you all get a chance to come here one and day and see some of the wonderful sights we got a chance to see, Malaysia truly is a magical country. Thanks for reading!

An interesting comment, but it is more profitable to start a new day every day;)
