Bergen, Norway & Hiking Mt. Fløyen (Tips & Pictures)

in #travel7 years ago

Today I'll post some pictures and useable information from my hike in Bergen, Norway. If you didn't see yesterdays post on hiking Harderkulm in Interlaken, Switzerland...you can check it out here. https://steemit.com/travel/@josephmcconnell/hiking-harderkulm-tips-and-pictures

Norway is a beautiful country and it is well worth visiting. Norwegian Airlines offers great deals throughout the year (no I don't work for them) and it's a great way to find cheap deals. Bergen is small city of 278,000 people and is a very endearing place.

Everything is centrally located near the docks. That is where you will find the indoor fish market, the outdoor markets, restaurants & transportation. This area is also a short walk from Mt. Fløyen, a hike that is not to be missed for outdoors enthusiasts. I mean....look at the view up at the top. It's elevation is 425m.

Norway is an expensive country for most travelers but there are some good deals to be had like this awesome fish soup ($10 USD).

If you've got money to burn you can take your pick from some nice eateries or peruse the raw bar at the seafood market. They've got some interesting things there. Some that are illegal in other countries including whale.

Yup. I ate the whale. It was actually pretty good. It tasted like a combination of swordfish and beef. I'm not gonna condemn the Norwegians for selling whale meat, like lots of other people would, it's a cuisine of their culture and I had to give it a try. If you're not into seafood there are some good little stands a few blocks away from the main touristy area where you can get a decent pizza or sandwich.

Back to Mt. Fløyen....you can take the funicular if you're not up for hiking. It's a simple 5 minute ride up and will cost about $5USD. If you're gonna go for the hike, it'll take about an hour if you're walking at a leisurely pace. And it gets steep in spots so it's best to be in shape.

When you get up there you can just chill out, relax and wait until nightfall.

After a night of hiking, get a good rest in your hostel or hotel and be sure to check out Bergen's central park before you leave. The calming water fountain was a highlight of the trip.
