A Winter in Malta #3 - The Blue Grotto

in #travel6 years ago

Hey, fellow Steemians!

Malta is the kind of island that has it all - from enchanting towns to spectacular landscapes. This small island has an abundance of amazing sights, both natural and man-made. So we planned out our day to include both: Blue Grotto - a gigantic natural bridge accompanied with sea caverns and megalithic temples of Mnajdra and Ħaġar Qim.

Our first stop was Blue Grotto, or to be more precise the large viewpoint directly above it. Getting there was easy as there was a bus (number 74) departing from Valletta and stopping right next to the viewpoint.

Many people hopped off at the same stop as we did so we were worried it was going to be crowded but the whole area was well fashioned and there was plenty of space to take pictures without breathing at somebody’s neck.

The bridge was incredible to look at, the sheer size of it made us stare at it in awe. We couldn’t find a reliable information on what the exact height of it is, but it sure looked tall enough to fit a 10-story building inside.

We heard from a few people that it’s also very nice to see the arch and the caves during the summer when the boat trips start to operate and let people visit them. We made it our goal to come back to Malta one summer and see everything from a different angle!

In Malta, every piece of rock has some interesting history to it. That’s also the case with the islet that can be seen in the distance, a couple miles of the coast.

Its name is Filfla and in the past, it used to be a home to a small fort and a monastery but unfortunately no remains can be found since parts of the island collapsed during frequent earthquakes. In the recent history, this piece of land was used for target practice by British Navy until it became a bird reserve due to it being a home to several rare animal species.

Thank you for reading! If you’re interested in seeing and reading about some of the oldest temples in the world, join us in the next post where we’ll show you more of Malta’s gems - the megalithic temples of Mnajdra and Ħaġar Qim.

Amazing- There are so many places in Europe that are now on my list of places to go. Is this quiet and remote? any chance for wild camping or campervanning overnight on the side of the road?

Malta has an amazing nature and you can always find a place to yourself. However, we're not entirely sure about those kinds of camping as we haven't done it. It's best if you researched it beforehand. Camping near a beach would definitely be an amazing experience, though.

Love the sea and blue sky! Yes! Waiting for your next post which must be haunting!

Haha, we'll try to publish it as soon as possible :)
