Travel - Camping in Western Sichuan, Miyaluo 米亚罗

A little over a year ago I set off on a spur of the moment travel trip with a couple of my Chinese friends to the western edges of Sichuan China, Miyaluo 米亚罗. The area is known for it's fall time trees that leave you with some of the most beautiful and colorful scenery you could possibly hope for. Unfortunately we came just a little too late and missed some of the red trees but as you can see from the picture below, it was still absolutely breath taking.

The trip is a stunning 6-8 hour drive through many mountains as you gradually climb higher and higher. The last few hours of the trip you turn down a road and drive through several Tibetan villages as you make your way to the camping zone. The houses are decorated in many different colors and the villages have colored flags draped all over.

Just an hour or so from the camp site we ran into some unexpected problems as a water slide had created a mini river blocking the road. One of the cars in front of us tried to drive through it but ended up getting stuck. With everyone's effort and some extra help called down from the village we finally managed to get them unstuck an hour later and continued our way up the mountain.

After a long car drive we finally made it and set up camp. We weren't the only campers there but it was already getting late and very cold so everyone was already tucked away in their respective tents. We woke up early and prepare some breakfast, a simple porridge before hiking into the mountains to view the scenery.

It was unbelievably cold and there were even some snow flurries but it was so worth it. We walked through the fields taking pictures and selfies while taking great notice of the massive mine field of yak poop everywhere!

If you ever find yourself in Sichuan with 2 free days around late September/ early October then I highly recommend visiting Miyaluo. It's autumn beauty is quite well known around Sichuan and is a popular spot for people to camp. You do need to bring your own tent and food, as well as some very warm clothes but it's such an amazing experience.
