Pandora

A wondrous world of floating mountains and steep waterfalls. The land of Pandora awaits you at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Opening just 2 months ago on May 27th 2017, this has to be one of the most intricately detailed park sections I have yet to see. The environmental designing must've cost a LOT of bitcoins. There are bio-luminescent plants and alien creatures inside the 12 acre World of Avatar. The theme for this area is based on James Cameron's 'Avatar' film from 2009 and contains 2 main attractions so far; The Flight of Passage & the Na'vi River Journey.

The surrounding vegetation is unbelievable. It was very difficult to tell which plants were real and which were fake. It looked as if you were hiking on another earth-like planet.

The Flight of Passage

The line for the 'Flight of Passage' ride was long. The workers said it would be a 2 to 3 hour wait but since it was a brand new ride and we arrived right as the park opened, we decided to wait it out. It only took us about 1 hour total and it wasn't too bad at all. The queue line took you on a journey through a series of caves and underground bases. Here are some 'ancient' drawings on the walls of a cave.

One of the caves was dark but everything was glowing. I never saw the movie 'Avatar' but I imagine this was what Pandora was like. After walking through this mind boggling section of Animal Kingdom I definitely want to see the movie and I plan to watch it soon.

The line brought us through an "Air Lock" door to ensure that the humans will survive. Apparently the air quality on the Pandora planet is toxic to humans. Along the way we were able to see Na'vi environmental conservation efforts.

As we entered the air locked room we realized we were walking into an underground base. It was full of scientific equipment and crazy contraptions. Below is a painting on the wall of an Avatar flying a Banshee. That is what we were about to be doing! The Flight of Passage ride is a state-of-the-art 3D augmented reality flight simulator where you get to summon an Avatar and ride on the back of a Banshee through the world of Pandora. Even though I never saw the movie, I was getting absolutely hyped at this point.

Here is some of the science equipment inside the base. This laboratory is home to the Alpha Centauri Expeditions (ACE) who are working to restore the banshee population in Pandora. They were harvesting the mineral 'Unobtanium' (which also happens to be a crypto-currency: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/unobtanium/ ).

Below you can see an Avatar floating in a tube. I don't exactly know what was going on here but I think they are using his brain power so that humans have the ability to fly on banshees. Without the help of the Na'vi (Avatar) people, humans would be eaten and killed if they approached the banshees.

We walked through the final tunnel and were escorted into our flight simulator room. We were briefed on the ride and given a quick background of what we were about to be doing. The ride was in a dark room and we sat on motorcycle-like devices while wearing special glasses. The machine had to sync to our body and after reaching 100%, a screen opened up in front of us and we were flying on the back of a dragon.

At this point I had to put the camera away but you can see the full ride on a video from YouTube below:

Reaction

This was BY FAR the most technologically advanced ride I have ever been on. The detail that went into just waiting in line was unreal and the ride itself did not disappoint. This virtual reality system was incredible. You could feel the dragon breathing between your legs, smell the environment of Pandora and even feel the splash of water when flying over the coast. This attraction was well worth the wait and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Disney. It provided an epic escape from the real world of Animal Kingdom. If you never saw the movie 'Avatar', you will certainly feel the need to watch it after visiting.
