A Look Inside The Long Room
Trinity College Library - Dublin, Ireland
The Long Room is the 65 meter main chamber of the old Trinity College Library in Dublin, Ireland. This fascinating space was built in the early 1700's and houses over 200,000 of the library's oldest books. In the 1800's the Trinity College Library was granted the ability to receive a free copy of every single book published in Ireland and Britain. I had the opportunity to tour the library when I was in Dublin visiting @cneck earlier this month.
The arched wooden barrel ceiling and the upper library gallery are very cool features of The Long Room. Originally there was only one floor with a flat ceiling, but eventually the library needed to expand due to the influx of books. In the mid 1800's they created the breathtaking upper gallery for extra storage space.
Trinity College Library received 14 marble busts from the famous Flemish sculptor, Peter Scheemakers. These are featured in The Long Room along with some others including a bust of Jonathan Swift, made by French sculptor Louis François Roubiliac.
An intricate spiral staircase led to the upper gallery, as you can see in the photo below. The small details in every aspect of this library were truly impressive. It reminded me of something from a movie set. This is one of the most magnificent libraries in the world.
The books on the shelves were very old. Some of them had bands wrapped around them to support their bindings. The Trinity College Library contains some of the most important writings in history, from encyclopedias and dictionaries, to science and fiction, written by some of the greatest writers of the 18, 19 and 20th centuries.
I thought it was very interesting that the shelves were in alphabetical order but there was no shelf for the letter 'J'. It's like the library purposely excluded 'J', for some odd reason. I personally think it's one of the coolest letters in the alphabet!
