On The Road To Nomad - Day 5 (5/22/18) Illinois to Missouri

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

I’m going to try something a little different today. Julia is behind the wheel so I’m actually starting this post from the passenger seat. During our tear down we got to talking to the people next to us who were also getting ready to head out. They are an older couple (not that we’re spring chickens or anything but we don’t get the discounts on pancakes at the IHOP like they do yet). They have spent some time at Yellowstone every year since the early 1980’s and we’re able to give us some very good information on what to expect at Yellowstone. Thank you random older couple from Michigan, if we run into you again 15 years from now the pancakes are on us.

We hit the road at 9:30 and drove past the entrance to Historic Route 66.

We got to spend a little bit of time last year driving along Route 66 and would love to explore it further on a future trip. For more information on Historic Route 66 check out Route 66.

It was only a matter of minutes before we crossed the state line to Missouri aka Mark Twainville (So many thing here in MO are named after the great Mark Twain.
In fact Mark Twain was such a badass I feel he deserves a Wikipedia link too. Mark Twain.

Former home of the St Louis Rams which is MY football team. I have been a Rams fan since I was a pup. Having grown up in Los Angeles I just had to stay true to my team even after they moved to old St Louis. Now they’re back in LA. They could become the Podunk ID Rams and is still be a fan so who cares where they call home. Since random links seem to be the order of the day here is my gratuitous link to... The Los Angeles Rams

You do realize how lucky you are today with all of this free education?

Julia just did her first full gas stop, in and out. You GO girl! She also recognized the fact there were several pumps dedicated to RVs only.

Traveller Tip # 4: Whenever possible use gas stations which cater to truckers and travelers such as Flying J, Pilot and TA (not what you think, sorry!). There’s a great app called Park Advisor which I highly recommend if you’re doing any kind of RV traveling and I’ll be doing a review on this soon.

In case you’re wondering where Traveller Tips 1 through 3 are you’ll need to check out my previous On The Road To Nomad Posts.

Our 2nd gas stop should have been a breeze since we stopped at a TA but we soon noticed this one didn’t have a ton of room to maneuver through. So much for Traveller tip # 4. I had to jump out and remove our sway bar so we could back up but I still stand behind tip # 4. We got to our campground at Lewis and Clark State Park around 4:30. @juliabreheny can’t drink coffee without cream (flavored cream no less) and neither of the pit stops we made today sold cream so we took a 4 mile drive into a small town across the border in Kansas, picked up some cream and junk food then headed back to the campground. This is a nice quiet place with clean bathrooms and showers. The only downside is that bugs are numerous and apparently entirely immune to bug repellent.

Our plan tonight is to settle in and get some work done, connect with nature and get to bed early.

Miles travelled = 295

Tomorrow we’re heading to South Dakota which as travelled as we like to think we are, none of us has ever been to. Can’t wait for the new experience!

Thank you for checking in and until next time, we’ll be seeing you... ON THE ROAD!

Sort:

woohooo on the road again! Good for you guys :) Keep on, keeping on :)

Hey question for ya! Is the goal just to get to Yellow Stone as quick as possible!? Seems like you've traveled quite a distance but mostly driving!

Our goal is to travel a lot in the beginning. We’ve driven jus over 300 miles every day. Today we’re only doing a littl over 250 and will be in South Dakota which we’ve never been to. We’ll be doing some shorter drives and actually staying in one place for 3 days to enjoy some sites and relaxation. There is a decommissioned missile silo near one of the places we’re staying and I’m really hoping to see that.
