Trip Highlights #3

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

First, the bad news. The laptop seems to have died. It won't charge. But I still have the chromed robot turd! So I will attempt a post from my phone.

Today's trip crossed the rest of North Dakota and into Minnesota. We left behind the badlands and craggy hills, crossed the Missouri River in Bismarck, watched the rolling hills subside into a gently undulating prairie, and then saw the lakes begin to populate the landscape.

Before I forget, though, there where two North Dakota high points I neglected to cover yesterday, so allow me to rectify that immediately.

I am glad I got that taken care of.

Now in all seriousness, we stopped in Jamestown, ND to see their Pioneer Village museum and the world's largest buffalo!

Our first stop was at a true tourist trap offering a gift shop, museum, and a chance to feed some domesticated bison.

side note: I will probably be using the terms "buffalo" and "bison" interchangeably. The former is inaccurate but remains common usage.

The bison were uncooperative, remaining at the far edge of the pasture area despite my offering of buffalo feed in their trough. The museum appeared to be in the middle of renovation, but had interesting taxidermy and technology on display. See images below. The stuffed bison is as good as it gets for a closeup of this species

After this stop, we drove another couple hundred yards down the road and around the curve to the real museum. Both stops were free, but the main attraction is far better. It is a proper pioneer village display with restored and replica buildings. Apparently author Louis L'Amour grew up in this town, and there was also a small building dedicated to his youth and career.

After we left, I took some pictures on the way as we transitioned from North Dakota to Minnesota.

And there you go. I closed with a photo of an authentic Minnesota swamp. You can't get more Minnesotan than that.

Edit

Good news! The laptop seems to be charging again, at least temporarily! I'll take advantage of this to embed a couple links to the previous posts. I may need to pop open the case and try soldering the power charging module in case that is the fault point.

"You can't get more Minnesotan than that." Haha :D
Looks like a nice trip!

Sorry about your laptop:(
I got it right, that's the first village there? (Hard to formulate with my english:(
It looks like an awesome trio, I love knowing more about how people lived before us so much! Thank you for awesome photos, I was surprised how the themes are varied in one museum:)

I do not think Jamestown was the first settlement in North Dakota, although it shares a name with the first permanent English settlement in Virginia. It has a historical society that wants to preserve the past though, and their location on the interstate highway makes it an easy stop for tourists. Since it is toward the eastern side of the state, they also attract visitors from most of the midwest as they travel west on vacations or head north to Canada.

Oh, I see. Thank you for your reply!:)

Confession: I upvoted this post for no other reason than to test my new voting power after HF19.

Conclusion: HF19 F#&king rules!

I am a bit disappointed at the rate my vote power depletes though. For my own confession, I must admit to changing to 25% vote power to compensate. It still feels like overkill. I suspect an eventual reversal, like an inverse of the fallout from the last fork.

I only vote a few times a day anyway, so for me this is perfect. I guess people who vote more often will have to do what you did. Hopefully it works out to be a net positive for steemit in general.

Yeah, I upvote a lot. Always have, even when my vote was worthless.
