HOW TO SPEAK AUSTRALIAN

The basic INTRO.

The term for Aussie slang and pronunciation is strine, and it is often characterized by making words as short as possible.

The story goes that it was developed by speaking through clenched teeth to avoid blowies (blow flies) from getting into the mouth.

Australian English is similar to British English, but many common words differ from American English and there  are many unique Aussie slang terms, and Australian expressions.

Some great examples are:

Arvo: afternoon

Barbie: barbeque

Esky: cooler, insulated food and drink container

Mozzie: mosquito

Roo: kangaroo

Root: sexual intercourse

Servo: petrol/gas station

She’ll be right: everything will be all right

Sickie: sick day

Ute: Utility vehicle, pickup truck

& the list just goes on.

So what it really boils down to is that Australian slang, 'Strine', is a way of using certain English words and  phrases.

These have all become iconic to Australians. You may find that us Australians tend to speak quickly, not always, it probably depends on the number of coldies / stubbies (beers) we've sunk down!

On the left are the 750ml bottles (longnecks),

Can in the middle,

& to our right are the 375ml STUBBIES!

All of which can be called "coldies"!

What others say about Australian slang:

" Do people say “Crikey” a lot Down Under? In my experience, not as much as I had assumed they would. Except for the few times that I’ve heard “Fair dinkum” via the generation older than me, I also haven’t heard much of the typical slang “G’day” or “sheila.” ........."

You can of course find lots of great slang dictionaries online, such as the handy Australian Slang Dictionary or Aussie Slang and the list just goes on.

So just Google it and she'll be right mate.

This is a very good site that I found via the Google search engine: http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html

So now that I've given you the basics, we can go on from here and watch another iconic Australian beer ad/TV Commercial which was all over the USA and Canada (dare I say Nth America)

On that note:

Cheers mates,

& till the next time, HAVE A GOOD ONE!

Great, especially love the cartoon. You forgot to put this under #teamaustralia

Fixed!

Thanks for the tip!

When I was on a business trip to Houston, TX (The Lone Star State) one of the head honchos sitting at the table said "You talk funny"

I just answered "Ha, look whos talking"

Everyone just cracked up laughing. Later on I found out that he was the man who was going to be signing off on my pay cheque... luckily he thought it was funny, but I was in fact dead serious!

PS. Texans & southerners in general over State side are very similar to the old school Australians. Very proud, very productive and very straight forwards and up front.... excellent people.

Good story Jack... don't waste it on me though. Put it into a post and make a few bucks with it! SK.

Took your advice, did it... & while doing so I had another little flash back of another very similar scene, but again on the opposite side of the globe.

Thanks for the advice.

PS. I'm having fun here, actually enjoying my time here and as you mentioned, '.. making a bob or two doing so..'
