Quick Tip: Label Passports with Initials

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Ticketing, security, immigration, car rental, SIM buying (well at least before we switched to Google Fi), credit card use. It seems like we’re constantly pulling out the stack of passports and shuffling through to find the right one.

Quick Tip: put an initial on the back of the each passport for quick identification. Here are my simple instructions and why.

Grab

  • Masking tape
  • Permanent marker
  • Knife
  • Stone counter or ceramic plate

Overly Detailed Instructions

  1. Tear off about 15 centimeters (6 inches) of tape from the roll. I use masking tape in the event I need to remove the labels for some official reason.
  2. Lightly stick the tape to the counter or plate. We’ll need the tape to come off easily.
  3. Choose an initial for each person in the family. You might need to use a middle initial if you have overlap.
  4. Use the permanent marker to write the initials on the tape providing space between each. We found that pen ink smudges and wears off.
  5. Separate the initials by scoring the tape with the knife. Peel and stick to the back of the associated passport.

We’ve had these labels on our passports for about two years, and they have held up to our heavy travel. The back of a passport is where airlines place security check stickers. We've not had an official question the initials.
