Epic Floods Signal the Start of Saigon's Wet Season

in #travel6 years ago

I think we can safely say that the dry season has come to an abrupt end in Ho Chi Minh City. Today sees massive storms for the fourth consecutive day. These are not the usual one hour affairs either it is hammering down for hours on end. The night before last saw a storm that lasted throughout the night. Yesterday’s rain started in the early afternoon and continue into the night. At the time of writing it has been continually pouring down for about 4 hours and is not showing many signs of stopping.

I’m stranded in Cafe 56 Tuan Rua, in the Binh An area of District 2. It’s a nice little cafe enjoying a Caphe Sua Da, iced coffee with condensed milk. I came here for a business meeting two hours ago and have been unable to leave since. I am supposed to be driving into District 1 for another meeting in an hours time, but that is starting to look unlikely.

I know from previous experience that the floods in District 2 will be pretty bad right now, especially in Tao Dien. Today is a high tide and it floods here even without rain. Driving through a foot a rain water is not my idea of fun, particularly as many roads have potholes which can take you by surprise when you can’t see them.

Still, with the rain comes cooler air and it had been stifling for a few weeks prior to the deluvian onslaught starting. It is the great paradox of living here, we look forward to the rains coming so much when the temperatures reach their peak, but within a few days the reality of the disruption to normal life makes us want them to end. Only 6 months to go!
