#78: A Visit To The First Floating Market Of India
Two months ago, India got it's first floating market which was inaugurated on the Republic Day(26th Jan) in Kolkata. The market comprises of more than 110 boats and around Rs 6 crores (9,21,000 USD) has been spent on setting it up! The sole reason of establishing the market was to remove the vendors who had set up their stalls by the adjacent road (which needed to be widened) and provide them with another location.
The vendors who lost their shops were rehabilitated here and these boats host more than 280 shops! A wooden walkway has been constructed to help the shoppers walk around with the boats on either side. At night, when the lights are lit, it looks so beautiful with the cold breeze and the sparkling water adding to the beauty.
The entire area is spread across 2000m. The shops here sell fruits, vegetables, meat, local snacks and a lot more. In fact, in the tiny boats, salon is also available!! The vendors sell the freshest of fruits and vegetables and the prices are low as well.
If you ever visit Kolkata, make sure to take a stroll through the market in the evening. Something is sure to catch your eyes here!
Cheers!
