  • Moderate-level eruption of lava continues from multiple points along the northeast end of the active fissure system.

  • Fissure 22 is erupting a short line of low lava fountains that feed a channelized flow that reaches the coast just north of MacKenzie State Park.
  • Spattering continues from a reactivated Fissures 6 that intermittently feeds a short lava flow.
  • Fissures 17 and 19 continue weak spattering.
  • Spatter from fissure 22 is moving at 1.1 meter per hour toward PGV site.
  • Ground deformation has slowed.
  • A small explosion occurred at 12:55 AM at Halema'uma'u crater at Kilauea's summit. It produced an ash plume that reached about 7,000 ft above sea level and was carried by the wind to the southwest. Several smaller ash emissions have also taken place and produced abundant ash.
  • Current SO2 emmisions are 10-15 tons a day: triple their “normal” level.
  • Lava has crossed Hwy 137 and is entering the ocean.
  • Seismic levels at Halema'uma'u crater are increasing
  • Seismic levels down rift are decreaseing
  • Earthquakes in the last 24 hrs: 52 (as of 1700 HST)
  • Earthquakes in the past week: 624
  • Earthquakes in the past month: 2,822

  • Kalapana and Kapoho Roads are open to residents only. Identification is required.
  • Highway 137 is closed to all traffic between Kamaili Road and Pohoiki Road.
  • Kamaili Road is closed to all thru traffic. No stopping, this is a high sulfur dioxide area.
  • Everyone is asked to stay out of the area.
  • One DOCARE officer will post at the checkpoint at Kahakai Blvd and Beach Road, and one DOCARE officer at the checkpoint at the junction of Hwy 132 and Hwy 137 to assist Hawai‘i County Police with traffic and access control. DOCARE has provided a total of 5 officers to assist Hawaii County with traffic and access control and staff the EOC.
Lava: 40 structures, including 27 homes have been destroyed. Pāhoa Post Office is closed until further notice due to concerns over volcanic activity and air quality.
  • Earthquakes: The Hilo Post Office (federal), Waiakea Health Center and Keawa Health Center (state) are deemed unsafe due to structural cracks; structural assessments pending. Several residential buildings have reported minor damages; residential assessment not completed. Waterline at 132 was severed, water tankers are in the Kapoho area. The Department of Water Supply is looking into re-opening an old well that has not been used for 25 years. DWS is testing the water to see if it is potable.
  • Kalapana residents have their own water systems.
  • Lava entering ocean causing hydrochloric acid steam and glass particles in the air.
  • 35 new air monitors have been deployed. Data gathered by the monitors are fed into EPA’s Viper system, which is a wireless network based communications system which is now receiving volcanic gas and PM2.5 (ash) data from a total of 51 monitoring stations, including 6 HDOH ambient air monitors, 9 HNPS monitors, 5 USGS HVO monitors. Additional portable monitors are ready to deploy as the needs arise. Real time data is available for review with pictorial mapping. Progress made on modeling of H2S PGV plume, expect early results 5/22.
  • Air Quality Monitoring Taskforce members include representatives from Hawaii County, IMT, DOH (HEER, State Lab), EPA, NPS, and USGS.
  • Volcanic gases, primarily SO2 and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), pose a health risk. IDLH for each of these gases is 100 parts per million (ppm); readings near the fissures continue to exceed 100 ppm for both SO2 and H2S. http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/vmap/ Vog mainly impacts people with pre-existing respiratory illnesses, children, and the elerly.
  • Ongoing steam eruptions from the Overlook Crater producing ashfall, which can cause sickness if water is contaminated.
  • 18,00 N-95 mask arrived and are being distributed throughout the community.
