The Honolulu Star Advertiser did an excellent investigative piece on the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) lack oversight of Honokohau Harbor in Kona Hawaii where they allows private business to dock their boats and build structures without paying, or receiving, deeply discounted rates.

For details about the investigation please read the article by clicking the link below. We, however, will focus in on the implications.

We have heard for decades that the State of Hawaii cannot police the environment because of the lack of money and manpower. Now to find out that the State is allowing the business that take advantage of the land, and ocean, to do so without paying their fair share is upsetting.

These business disgust us. We know people have to make a living, but knowingly abusing the system and using the land and ocean. Taking fish from the ocean. Making money from the land and not giving back.

If this is happening here in and extremely visible and easily monitored area, that is right off the main highway, one can only imagine what is happening in the other areas that are more remote.
