Since 1635 the city was known as port. In 1735 French have made it the administrative center of Mauritius, and he has turned into important point of supply for the French ships going to the Cape of Good Hope. The city has received the name "Port Louis" in honor of the king of France Louis XV. The first city governor was the French seafarer Bertrand François of Mae de Labourdonne.

The population of the city generally consists of descendants of the workers who have arrived from India in the 19th century. Earlier on the island the slaves imported here by British and French in the 18th century lived. More than 75 percent of the population of the island are made by Indians of the mixed origin: Hindus, Chinese, Africans and Europeans.
