The Citadelle of Quebec - Quebec City - CANADA

in #travel7 years ago

The Citadelle of Québec is a national historic site located in the heart of Old Quebec, on the Plains of Abraham.

Built on a rocky cape called Cap Diamant, this star-shaped fortress offers a breathtaking view of Quebec City and the St. Lawrence River. This British fortress built between 1820 and 1850 played a vital role in the defensive system of the city.

The Citadelle of Quebec is currently occupied by the Royal 22nd Regiment, the only French infantry regiment in Canada. Visitors can watch the changing of the guard, the retirement ceremony, visit the many buildings, the museum and the soldier's school.

Inspired by the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace in London, this ceremony is unique in Quebec.

My appreciation

Having been a cadet between 13 and 15 years old for the Royal 22nd Regiment of the Canadian Army, this is the kind of visit that I appreciate very much. Canadian history takes root in the conflicts between the English and French and the citadel reminds us of these important moments as well as the different mandates of this fortress over the years. I recommend this visit to any visitor interested in Canada's military history. However, it is equally interesting to explore the surrounding area, the Plains of Abraham, as well as the old town with its magnificent view of the St. Lawrence.

Looking forward
