Fossil Shell Beach: Krabi - not worth the trip

in #travel6 years ago

This isn't terribly far away from both the beach areas of Ao Nang nor the center of Krabi-town but that is not why i say it isn't worth the trip. I say it isn't worth the trip because unless you are a paleontologist this is going to look like macaroni in some cement to you.

Now I am not trying to say that something that is 35 million years old is not important. It definitely is. These area meant to be some of the oldest fossil remains that exist in the world. However, there is virtually nothing there to justify what they charge people to get in here other than some maccaroni in the cement and some poorly worded and oft-repeated words about how old it is.

While I understand the historical importance of this site and the fact that it should be preserved, It has been turned into a real-life tourist trap. There is virtually nothing to be seen here and there are loads of shops selling garbage that is completely unrelated to this non-issue attraction at the same time.

by the way, don't ever buy an inflated pufferfish, ESPECIALLY if it is real

Most of the gear in here is plastic replica crap, but in the event that it isn't (and some of isn't a replica, such as the pufferfish) don't you think it is a bit moronic that a nature reserve would be in the business of selling ocean wildlife relics? Whether they are genuine or made of plastic is kind of irrelevant at that point, don't you think?

"hey, let's protect the planet and while you're here these are some rather rare fish we killed in the hopes that you would buy them as a souvenir you aren't allowed to bring back to your country anyway!"

If you look online about what people think about this place on "unbiased" review sites like Trip Advisor, you will see that almost everyone gives low marks. The reason for this is simple: There is very little reason for this place to be declared a national park other than to make money. It is special only in a "hey old fossils that appear as though they aren't even real" type way, but the facilities designed around it and the information about it are just terrible.

If they were truly interested in preserving the fossils they would simply close it off to the public. The cynic in me doesn't think that is the case though. It was never about the fossils, it is simply the fact that they won't let you anywhere near them until you have already paid $8 a person.

Then once you go down there and you see this

then leave 5 minutes later you will see. This place is not worth visiting and to be honest the more people that visit it the more that the actual fossils (I question that they are even real) just get destroyed as more and more people walk on them.

Do yourself and your family a favor and skip this tourist trap. It is not worth seeing and any image search engine is going to give you much better shots than you are likely to see while you are there anyway.

If there's one thing I always value about your publications, it's your sincerity, @gooddream. Not just the movies, the things you do, the places you visit. Before my eyes you have credibility. Personally, I think that many natural tourist places are exploited only for the benefit of a few people. In this case, who benefits: the government, a company? Thank you for your sincere review.

i haven't been to that beach in years... but these days it costs 200B / person in order to get in there and it is a huge letdown. 200 Thai Baht is about 8 USD.

Ok thats really high for Beach.
