From Miserably Cold to Basking in the Patagonian Sun: Part 2 (Recall #3)
In my last recall post I talked about the hellish weather I encountered at Torres del Paine. Instead of carrying on with the intended Q hike, I hiked out.
Luckily I did, it was perfect further north.
After rain, snow, and freezing all day for 4 days straight it was time to head to a new location. Hoping for some sun, I hitchhiked north to Calafate, Argentina to check out the Perito Moreno Glacier. I managed to find a ride with a Chilean guy from his home town of Puerto Natales heading up to Perito Moreno for his day off of work. He didn't speak a lick of english so it was great practice for my Spanish. I had heard nothing about the glacier before arriving in South America. It was sure a great surprise, absolutely massive. It was also my first time seeing a glacier up close. The glacier blue in a photo truly does not compare to seeing it with your eyes. Stunning.
From Calafate I again hitchhiked up to El Chalten. This time with an Argentinian couple roadtripping around their country. Lovely, sweet people who let me pack into their already packed car.
One of my favorite places in all of South America. El Chalten has it all for outdoor enthusiasts. I would love to go back. I did a three day loop hike with a night at Lago de los Tres and a night at Lago Torre. I lucked out with picture perfect weather the whole time.
