One of the most fascinating areas of the beautiful north east coast is the lighthouse built on St Mary's Island, just north of the town of Whitley Bay..
The tiny island, which can be visited at low tide by a short causeway.
Because of the dangerous rocks and cliffs, the whole area north and south of the river tyne was hazardous for shipping.
In the 11th century monks built a chapel on the island, and lit and maintained a lantern on the chapel tower to warn passing ships.
The present and Lighthouse keepers cottagers cottages were built in 1898, 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks in the construction. You can climb the 137 steps to the top (I did- that's how I know the number)The light was powered bay paraffin.
The lighthouse is now a tourist attraction, amid a nature reserve.
Early morning sunrise shows a glorious range of golden colours as dawn breaks over the sea.
