So here we go with the 2nd part and the historical sights of the area..
In the center of the main village you will see a big building . It's the Kalavryta Museum.
This building was built in the first years of 20th century and operated as Primary school from 1906 and stopped in WW2, as during the Italian occupation was used as prison for 500 political prisoners until 1943 when the German occupation took over. The school was operative until 1991 when the Ministry of culture decided to transform it in a museum for the story of Kalavryta and the Holocaust.
It was there that the Germans Nazi gathered all the people of the village , picked the males over 12 years old, locked the younger children and women in the school and set it on fire. Fortunately for them the school was left unguarded and they managed to escape before they burn.
If you decide to visit it , the ticket costs only 3 euros. Here are some photos of the inside of the museum(in your visit you will see photos of the area before and during the war , old furniture and staff , some German war equipment as also documents and personal belongings of the murdered and many more).
in this picture you can see the bullet wholes on the coat that belonged to law student 18 years old and some of his belongings.
From this door the Nazi separated men from women and as the sign says it will be locked forever ,in their memory...
this a monument outside the museum dedicated to all those who lived the tragedy
Unfortunately the male population didn't have the same fortune as they led them to Kapi Hill and murdered them ..
Here are some pictures of the monument area as it is today. It's located about 1km away from the main village.
In the next post I 'll show you the Kalavryta Ski Center and the monastery of Agia Laura, where the oath for the Hellenic revolution against the ottomans took place in 1821.
Till then , take care !
