RE: Travel Story: Hitchhiking Tierra del Fuego & Learning History (Genocide of the Selk'nam)

in #travel6 years ago

I love to read hitchhiker stories in other countries. Where I live hitchhiking is not really accepted - one assumes the hitchhiker is an ax murderer, and therefore only people that are more likely to be criminals try it. Actually I saw a lady doing it today and she definitely looked violent :)

That is a very sad bit of history you have preserved. I have had stories of a similar nature here. A sad theme throughout the Americas.

Thanks a lot for the comment @ginnyannette!

Wow, so sad to hear about the bad hitchhiking reputation at your place. Where do you live btw?

Guess we share more or less the same here in Brazil, it's still possible to hitchhike but both parts are afraid of each other - travelers distrust the drivers and vice versa.

Isn't it sad what those guys have done to aborigens? I know that history is made of stronger people dominating the weaker, but what those guys have done is genocide! All the aborigens wanted was to live peacefully. They were literally hunting indians there, 1 pound for each kill... and if you see it hasn't happened to far away in history - early 20th century they were still doing it.

I live in the USA, in Florida. According to my husband (who actually is from Brazil, but lived in Oregon for a while too) Oregon is friendly toward hitchhikers. There is a pretty big difference in culture from one side of this country to the other though.

So cool, where is he from?

Yeah guess near big cities it's always an issue, anywhere in this world actually. People are so stressed and worried about violence that they won't accept anyone in their car, so sad.

That's why I like to travel to wild places or to really isolated areas. Everything is simpler and people are more open to strangers. They may distrust you at first, but once you talk to them and show that you are cool, they open their house for you if needed.

He is from Fortaleza. I have no idea where that is :)

Yes, I agree, the country is much better than the city life.

Niiiiice, Fortaleza is all the way up in North East. You should go there with him, beaaaaatiful beaches.

We've been talking about it. One of these days. He'd love to go back.
