SAINT THOMAS CATHEDRAL (CATEDRAL DE SANTO TOMAS)! .. CIUDAD BOLÍVAR, VENEZUELA.

in #travel6 years ago

Walking through Ciudad Bolívar we had the opportunity to visit the old cathedral of Santo Tomas de Angostura. Also known as the Cathedral of Ciudad Bolívar, it is located in Plaza Bolívar, in the historic quarter of the city, it is colonial style and is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. It was inaugurated in 1840 by Monsignor Mariano de Talavera and Garcés.

Angostura was named in 1818, by Simón Bolívar the liberator, provisional capital of the republic and it is there where the liberator gave the famous "Speech of Angostura", on February 15, 1819, in which he renounces the absolute powers that had been granted and gives his vision on how it should be the new republic that was beginning.

Before the cathedral was finished and built, on one of its walls was executed the hero of General Independence in chief Manuel Piar, on October 16, 1817, after the sentence of the court that found him guilty of the crime of conspiracy and treason to the homeland The body of General Piar was exposed throughout the night before the town as a sign of the end that awaited the traitors. He was shot exactly on the wall that adjoins the Plaza Bolivar, where you can see the hole made by one of the bullets with which he was shot.

The Juncal and San Felix.

"The victory he has won
General Piar in San Felix
it is the brightest event
