Tasty travel (part 10). High Peaks Winery, Winthrop, New York

in #travel8 years ago

Took a Beautiful Winter afternoon and went to Potsdam, New York to find the High Peaks Winery. We were first introduced to this winery back in October on Columbus Weekend.

By the time that we got to the High Peaks Winery booth, it was getting to the end and there was not much to choose from. Just a dry white wine and a sweet red. Well you know me; I passed on the sweet red and went straight to the dry white. It is called Placid and has the nicest tones of citrus and oak flavor. I bought the last two bottles that he had and made our way home to look for more. His winery is just over 30 minutes from my house and I figured that I could get it in the local shop, nope; they had not heard of him and didn’t carry any of his wine.

I snached that bottle up and made for home. I have never been as pleased with a Merlot as this one. Deep rich cherry flavor with a tinge of oak to chase it down. Lovely tannin and was a very nice complement to steak and baked potatoes.

It was a nice sunny winter afternoon and we are all headed to see where High Peaks Winery is located. Thank god for the banner at the road that stated ‘Wine Tasting’ because we passed by it the first time. It is located in a beautiful old barn behind a large stone house. The wine shop/tasting room is in on end and the rest is set up to make wine. There are currently not grapes being grown and the juice and some fruit is coming in from California, New York and other areas of this great country that we live in. He has perfected his recipes and is able to offer 7 different wines.

Placid, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Wilderness White, Lakeside White, Mountain View Red and Riverflow Red. They are all unique and well worth the looking and asking for.

I have already told you about the Placid and Merlot.

The Cabernet Sauvignon was a pleasant blend of earthy flavors with a smooth Oak tone.

Wilderness White is a Sweet wine that has the great refreshing flavor of strawberries.

Lakeside Whites was a hit with all of us, because we all seem to agree that peach is a great flavor and this wine is a nice balance of peaches without being too sweet.

Mountain View Red is what I would call that perfect summer wine. Nothing really stands out in the form of a distinct flavor and all of us agreed that it was like a well blended Sangria….and that brings us to the next surprise that High Peaks Winery does…they have a Slushie machine with this great wine in it!!! I didn’t want to leave. So refreshing, so cool and delightful!

The last wine that we tasted was the Riverflow Red. It is raspberry heaven. Nice and sweet with a robust flavor of raseberry. It is the perfect way to end a meal and cleanse the pallet.
